Although there were many similarities between the Series III and the Series IIA, there were significant differences. The Series III had similar body and engine options, but differences such as the headlights now being mounted in the fenders. The traditional metal grille was replaced with a plastic one. Four engines were offered; previously there was just a 2.25-liter gas version, a couple of diesels, and a V8 unit. The 2.25-liter engine's compression was raised from 7:1 to 8:1. All forward gears now had synchros, an alternator replaced the generator, and the dashboard was redesigned.
