During the 1930s, Mercedes' bread-and-butter car was the 170, which had been introduced in 1931 at the Paris Salon. It had a box-section frame rail chassis and was powered by a 1696cc six-cylinder side-valve engine. It was given a synchronized four-speed transmission and four-wheel hydraulic brakes. One of its class-leading features was its fully independent suspension all around. Front suspension was by upper and lower parallel transverse leaf springs while the rear suspension utilized swing axles and coil springs.
Nearly 14,000 examples were built through 1936.
This particular Mercedes-Benz 170 Sedan was a body that was produced by Mercedes-Benz Karosserie at Sindelfingen. Its first owner has been identified from factory records, and the original German registration document and owner's manual remain with the vehicle. It has been sympathetically restored several years ago. It is finished in maroon with black fenders and a black vinyl roof insert that is outlined with aluminum molding. The rear features a trunk plus an externally mounted spare tire. Inside, there are tan leather seats with matching door panels in vinyl and tan carpets.
It was originally delivered via the Dresden branch of Daimler-Benz in October of 1935. The first owner was Karl Harlung of Pirna Germany. The body still retains its original 'Werk Sindelfingen' emblem. In addition, the headlamp bar has a medallion for OAMTC, an Austrian motor club that was founded in 1896.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2016
