The long-hood/short-deck Continental Mark III made its debut in April 1968 as a 1969 model, and continued with subtle changes through the 1971 model year. Unlike the $10,000 Continental Mark II from 1956, the $6,585 (without options) Mark III was designed to be a mass-produced challenge to the Cadillac Eldorado. Although 'purists' consider the Lee Iacocca creation a bit 'commercial', the Mark III outsold Eldorado from day one.
The early production Mark III shown is a 3,600-mile car that's still riding on its four original tires. It was purchased new by a gentleman who usually drove Mercedes-Benz cars, but fell in love with the Mark III styling. The car was kept indoors, in a finished room, with full air conditioning and heat, until the day he sold it in 1994 and it continues to be carefully conserved in the present owner's condition.
The elegant deep brown/burgundy color combination seen on this Continental was featured in the introductory Mark III advertising campaign.
