1936 Packard One Twenty Convertible Coupe

Packard lost $2.9 million in 1931 and a further $6.8 million in 1932. They had a profit of $506,000 in 1933 but lost over $7 million in 1934. This was mainly due to tooling up for the new 120 models. In order to survive the Great Depression, Packard created separate junior and senior series cars. Junior models were medium-priced cars while the senior models were the higher-priced cars that helped Packard earn its luxury reputation. The Model 120 was in the junior range. It was the first Packard offered for under $1,000 when it was introduced in 1935.

The Model 120 derives its name from its 120-inch wheelbase as well as the 120-horsepower, 282 cubic-inch flathead straight eight engine. It was capable of reaching 85 miles per hour. Packard built a new plant to mass-produce the 120, which featured independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes.

The ID plate of this car has the name of the original dealer who received it; Earl C. Anthony. He was seventeen years old in 1897 when he built the first car (electric) to run on the streets of Los Angeles. Mr. Anthony later founded the Los Angeles Auto Show and helped start major league baseball in Los Angeles. Mr. Anthony also provided a Packard 120 that led the Flag Day parade that opened the 1935 Dodger baseball season.
