1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Navigation
The Mercedes-Benz 'SL Gullwing' was the fastest production car of its day. This example is an early model as the SL grand touring car was introduced in 1954. Though later offered in roadster form, it is the Gullwing that is most distinctive and recognized as a true sports touring automobile. While it was one of the most desirable cars of its time - sought out by the sporting crowd and wealthy, it has remained a sought-after sports car today and is highly collectible.
Maybe not as well known, these cars won a number of races in the early 1950s. In fact, they raced at Le Mans, the Mille Miglia and the La Carrera Panamericana with great success. They were piloted by such famous drivers as John Fitch and Sir Stirling Moss.
The standard Gullwing had 215 horsepower utilizing a six-cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. They were mechanically quite complex for 1955. The car could deliver a top speed in excess of 160 miles per hour. The SL moniker referred to 'Sport Light', reflecting the use of tubular-steel and lightweight construction.
This car has received a recent thorough restoration and is shown with the original fitted luggage. The current owner has driven this car through 48 states.
