1908 Dart Lindsley Type B Buggy Navigation
The Dart Manufacturing Company of Anderson entered the automotive business by creating gasoline engines. It is believed that by 1910, the company had produced, or experimented with, the production of a chassis. It was thought that the Dart Manufacturing Company might have been associated with the Dart Trucking Company, located in Waterloo, Iowa. Both companies had once been based in Anderson, however, it is believed that there is no connection between them.
The Dart Buggy was typical of the era and is believed to be one of about six worldwide. The body is constructed of wood and painted green with yellow and red pin striping. The engine is an air-cooled, two-cylinder unit that produces ten horsepower. The chain-driven wooden wheels are powered by a planetary transmission. Stopping was by the rear-wheel brakes.
The passengers were protected from the elements by a black leather apron. Seating is for two or three, with a little storage area for smaller items. In many respects, this is similar to a horse-drawn carriage.
