The iconic Cavallino Rampante - or prancing horse - originated when Enzo Ferrari encountered as Italian Countess, the mother of a World War I flying ace. The pilot was known for painting horses on his plane's fuselage. The Countess suggested perhaps the horse might bright good luck on Ferrari's race cars. She may have been right, as decades of podium finishes on all manner of race tracks can attest. Today the Rossa Corsa, racing red paint, and the prancing stallion are known the world over, oozing luxury, power, and wealth in any language.

The mid-engine F40 was developed to commemorate Ferrari's 40th anniversary. It was the successor to the 288 GTO, the last car personally approved by Enzo Ferrari, and at the time the fastest and most expensive Ferrari ever made.

Enzo wanted a car built around a tactile, raw driving experience; no frills or performance enhancing technology here. He got his wish as one respected publication called it a 'mix of sheer terror and raw excitement.' It was equipped with air conditioning, but no sound system, door handles, glove box, leather trim, carpets, or door panels. This was, after all, a driver's car. Designed by Pininfarina, it weighed 3,000 pounds and used many weight-saving, carbon fiber and Kevlar panels. The 2.9 liter twin turbo V8 produced 478 horsepower and was one of the first production cars to crack the magical 200 miles per hour barrier. This European-spec F40 has been driven a little over 15,000 kilomters and is one of 1,311 built.
