Jaguar is quintessentially British. It dates to 1922 when Sir William Lyons and William Walmsley, founded the Swallow Sidecar Company. They introduced cars in 1935 and after World War II began crafting a well-deserved reputation for dashing styling and high performance as a steady stream of sexy sports cars and purpose-built race cars rolled out of their British factory. In the early 1950s they added a series of elegant luxury saloons.
The 3.8 liter Mark 2 boasted styling, performance and comfort for four adults, and was known as the world's first 'sports sedan.' Jaguar marketing coined the phrase Grace, Space, and Pace to capture the essence of the car's world-class pedigree. Passengers enjoyed ample quantities of burl walnut, chrome, Connolly leather and Wilton wool carpets. Jaguar's in-house wood shop created an interior whose fit, finish and overall opulence rivaled that of the finest cars anywhere. The heartbeat of the Mark 2 is the venerable DOHC inline six 3.8-liter producing 220 horsepower. It topped out at 125 miles per hour, making it the world's fastest production car at its introduction.
The original owners from California took delivery in Europe and toured the Continent before returning home. The current owner just completed an exacting 3 and a half year restoration. Options include a Borg-Warner automatic transmission, Dunlop chrome wire wheels, whitewall tires, power steering, reclining front seats and many more tasteful accoutrements. It is finished in its original cream and beige livery and still dons its 1963 California black license plate.
