A Company Named After a Director's Daughter
On May 1, 1924 Karl Benz's Benz & Cie, and Daimler Motoren, Gesellschaft, which had been founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, started working together. Daimler had died in 1900 and Maybach had left in 1907. Both companies continued to manufacture their separate automobile and internal combustion engine brands until, on June 28, 1926, Benz & Cie and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft formally merged to become Daimler-Benz AG. It was agreed that thereafter, all of the factories would use the brand name of 'Mercedes-Benz' on their automobiles, which were designed and built by Wilhelm Maybach. They derived their name from an engine named after the daughter of Emil Jellinek, a director who ordered a number of race cars built to her specifications by Maybach, stipulated that the engine must be named after his daughter, Mercedes.

The 300SC was available as a 2+2 Coupe, Cabriolet or Roadster and cost approximately $14,500 when new. A total of 200 were built between 1955 and April of 1958. This 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SC is one of only 49 Cabriolets produced. Its 2996-cc six-cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel-injection produces 175 horsepower and is capable of carrying this exclusive automobile to speeds of 112 mph. It came equipped from the factory with Decker Brescia radio and Bosch fog lights. Even Clark Gable owned one.
