The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500, the last of the Alfas offered as a separate chassis, debuted in 1939 and remained in production until 1953 by which time fewer than 2,200 of these automobiles had been produced. A total of 383 Super Sport (SS) models were built. Most of the coupes and cabriolets were built by Touring and Ghia but this rare cabriolet was built by Pinin Farina. Its lightweight, short wheelbase Super Sport chassis has Alfa's race-bred, twin-overhead-camshaft, 2.5-liter 6-cylinder engine with triple-carburetors capable of over 100 mph. A total of 2,800 6C 2500 chassis were made before the model ended in 1951, making it one of Alfa's most successful models produced at their Portello factory outside Milan.

Power is derived from a 105 horsepower, 2443cc DOHC inline six-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, coil-spring independent front suspension, independent trailing-arm torsion-bar rear suspension, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.

Vittorio Meneghelli, a prominent Italian expatriate brush manufacturer, artist, socialite, and collector of African art took delivery of the car in Venice, Italy, in 1949 and brought it back to Capetown, South Africa, on behalf of the actual first owner, marble magnate Edwardo Lupini. In addition to frequent long-distance touring, the Alfa was raced at Kyalami, in Midrand, South Africa. The Kyalami circuit has been the site of numerous Formula One races since the early 1960s. For competition purposes, the car was converted to a floor-mounted gear shifter.
