An open prototype version of Ferrari's 365 GTB/4 Daytona was displayed at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show. Production examples of the Spider began in 1971 and were sold through early 1974. The Spider versions were produced in fewer numbers than their berlinetta siblings, with just 121 examples produced. This was far fewer than the 1,406 closed Daytonas built.
These were the final front-engined convertible Ferraris built until the introduction of the 550 Barchetta, some three decades later.
This particular example is an original Daytona Spider. It is the 91st of the 121 built. It left the factory finished in Argento over a Nero interior and equipped for the United States market with factory Borletti air conditioning. It was originally delivered to William Harrah's distributor Modern Classic Motors of Reno, Nevada. It was subsequently sent to Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo in Portland, Oregon, and was sold by the Tonkin dealership to original owner Ian Chiles on January 15th of 1974. The car was traded back to Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo in 1975 and was subsequently sold to a new owner in California. The car would remain in the Western United States for the next 15 years.
In 1978 the car was in the care of Jerry Schwarz of Granada Hills, California. In 1979, it was owned by Ralph Tingle of Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1986, it was in the care of Sid Ferris of Portland. In 1990, it was acquired by two enthusiasts in Pittsburgh, PA and would remain there for several years. By this time, the car had been refinished in its current color scheme of Rosso Corsa with tan interior and a black top. It went to Florida for a short time before coming back to Pittsburgh and sold to Pittsburgh Penguins player Tom Borasso.
It was shown at the Cavallino Classic in 1999. It was then advertised for sale in the Ferrari Market Letter by Ron Spangler where it was described as a 'very original car, well sorted recently by Shelton.' Soon thereafter, it was acquired by its current owner.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2016
