This car, chassis number 704, was Denny Hulme's entry for the 1969 event. It wore race number 42 and was powered by a 159 cubic-inch dual overhead cam turbocharged Ford V8 engine which offered between 800 and 900 brake horsepower. By this point in history, Hulme had established a brilliant resume, having won the 1967 Formula One World Championship along with two Can-Am Drivers Championships. Along with fellow Formula One World Champion Jack Brabham, they were the only two non-Americans to compete in the 1969 Indy 500.
Denny Hulme started from 25th place on the grid, but was forced to retire after a clutch failure on lap 145, and had to settle for 18th after a long stint in 2nd behind Mario Andretti.
It is believed that Swede Savage drove #704 in four races later that year.
A 318-cubic inch stock block V8 replaced the 4-cam Turbo Ford V8.
In 1970, chassis number 704 was entered for Indy as the Eagle Ford of Bud Morley, of Denver, Colorado, but Morley failed to complete his driver's test. It next appeared in 1980, when it was raced in CART events by Dean Vetrock of Racine, Wisconsin, powered by a 355-cubic inch Chevrolet V-8.
Vetrock sold the car in the fall of 1981 to Chuck Haines of St. Louis, Missouri. Haines later entrusted Walter Goodwin to perform a restoration. After the work was completed, it was entered at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2007.
Doug Magnon purchased the car from Haines for the Riverside International Automotive Museum shortly after it competed at Goodwood. The car appeared at an HSR event at California Speedway in 2012 and has been used for exhibition laps at a number of events in the museum's ownership.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2016
