This massive vehicle is one of 98 White Model 706 Park Buses that were put into service between 1936 and 1938. They were used to ferry people around the park.
Many private companies were vying for contracts for the lucrative Yellowstone Park transportation service. One of the more successful endeavors came from the Yellowstone Park and Transportation Company which was backed by partners and headed up by Harry Childs. White was largely the exclusive provider of motor vehicles for the park in the earlier days, beginning during the stagecoach times with open-sided, multi-person carriers. When a fire destroyed most of the Yellowstone Park Transportation Company vehicles in 1925, the White Company was contacted by Harry Childs to negotiate a deal for about 90 new buses and vehicles to satisfy the demands of tourist season, which was just three months away. These vehicles largely served the Yellowstone Park Transportation Company until 1936 when the White 706 was introduced.
This particular example is vehicle number 427. It has been given a ground-up restoration and is finished in a two-tone Yellowstone Park Transpiration Company livery. The interior is tan and offers four rows of seating for 14 people.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2016
