The successful Ferrari 250 GTE of 1960 was followed by the 330 GT 2+2 in January of 1964. By the mid-1960s, fifty percent of all Ferraris produced were being built with four seats. In October of 1967, the 365 GT 2+2 was launched at the Paris Auto Show. It had similar styling to the limited edition 500 Superfast and was based on the contemporary 330GTC. It had a chassis comprised of Ferrari's familiar combination of oval and round steel tubing. It featured an independent suspension setup in both the front and rear, which was a first for a Ferrari 2+2. It was given Koni's hydro-pneumatic self-leveling system at the rear. The engine and drivetrain were mounted in rubber bushes to insulate the car's occupants from noise and vibration. Additional standard equipment included air conditioning, Girling ventilated discs, and ZF power-assisted steering. The 4.4-liter V12 engine offered 320 horsepower and gave the car a 0-60mph time of 7 seconds.
This particular example was completed in the summer of 1968, and was the 209th example built in the series. It was finished in Marrone Colorado over a Beige interior, and was in September 1968 delivered to Luigi Chinetti Motors, the US East Coast distributor for Ferrari. The car had been equipped for the US-market, with instruments in miles-per-hour.
The car's original owner is not known, but by 1988 it was owned by Menlo Park, California Ferrari-enthusiast Paul Houk. It appears the car was part of a lawsuit in the early 1980s, and sold by a local car dealer. Doug Pirrone and New York based Berlinetta Motorcars owned the car in late 1980s, and possibly up through the late 1990s. It is believed to have remained in the North East for most of its life.
In 2015, the car received a new set of XWX tires, and given a comprehensive service. It is currently finished in period-correct dark red metallic paint over a sharp black leather interior.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2016
