As the United States entered the 1980s, the American auto industry was suffering from an influx of governmental regulation that had been rushed into place as a result of fuel shortages and an aggressive environmental and safety lobby. Styling and design were stretched to the limit thus automobiles lacked the 'flair' the American public had become accustomed to during the previous several decades.
This model of Oldsmobile was one of the few cars of that era that retained some of that flair. It sported such things as a special suspension handling package, bucket seats, a special paint scheme, full instrumentation along with a popular accessory the day, a factory CB radio. Its diesel V8 engine produced over 30 MPG for the first time in a full sized car and helped General Motors gap the government's restrictive CAFE requirements (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) until fuel injected gas powered larger cars were ready for market.
Out of 42,604 Toronados sold in 1981, 2,488 were XSCs and of that number only 670 XSCs (1.6%) were diesel powered. 1980 and 1981 were the only years for the XSCs, making this model by far the rarest of this third generation of Toronados (1979 to 1985).
This car, when purchased new, had a price of $16,462.81. The original owners donated the car to the R.E. Olds Transportation museum, where it currently resides.
