Citroen introduced the 'Traction Avant' model in 1934. The name Traction Avant translates from French to 'front-drive.' This pre-War front-wheel drive model was designed by Andre Lefèbvre and Flaminio Bertoni, who also gave the vehicle unit body construction. This meant that the body and frame were built as a single component, resulting in greater structural rigidity than conventional construction methods. The front wheels had an independent suspension setup. The wheels themselves were moved to the far corners of the car, allowing it to have a low center of gravity, improving handling, and providing additional space for the driver and passengers.

Citroen debuted their Traction Avant at the 1934 Paris Motor Show. It would remain in production for over 23-years. During that time, it would be produced in several variations and multiple body styles, with over 760,000 examples built.

The second iteration of the Traction Avant was the 11, which had a larger and more powerful four-cylinder engine. They were built in two versions, including the 11BL (for 'légère,' or 'light'). The 11BL had the first generations shorter wheelbase and narrow track.
