'Every Man's Favorite' or 'Every Morning Fix it'
The E.M.F. Company was formed by Byron Everitt, Wm. Metzger and Walter Flanders. Everitt had been a successful automobile body manufacturer, Metzger had been one of the leading salesmen during the first year of Cadillac, and Flanders had learned to build cars efficiently while being Henry Ford's production manager.
The three partners founded their company in late 1908 and were building cars on Piquette Avenue in downtown Detroit, directly opposite of Henry Ford's famous Piquette Avenue plant where the first Model T was developed and the earliest Fords were built until 1910.
The E.M.F. soon garnered the reputation of being a high-quality, reliable automobile with a thirty-horsepower engine and a rear-mounted, three-speed transaxle transmission. The vehicles were built from 1908 until 1912 when the company was sold to Studebaker Motors.
The initials E.M.F. quickly became the recipient of many jokes ranging from 'Every Mechanical Failure' to 'Every Mistress's Favorite' despite the fact that the E.M.F. was one of the best-selling and affordable cars of the period.
