In its never-stop-challenging approach to endurance racing, Mazda took what it learned from its 757 series cars and began the 1988 season with three brand-new Mazda 767s. After moderate success, these three cars were replaced for the 1989 season with 767B specification cars, which were fast and competitive right out of the box.
Upgraded from the 757's three-rotor 13G engine, the four-rotor 13J 767s put out a healthy 6330 horsepower. Honing their race-craft, the Mazda team scored many top ten finishes against the best sports cars in the world, including Jaguar and Porsche.
This chassis, 767B-002, was first raced at Fuji 1000KMs in 1989, where it won the GTP class. Earlier that year, it also acquired its famous 'Charge' livery, with a color scheme that remains iconic of those halcyon days for Mazda. At LeMans in 1989, this car finished ninth overall, completing 365 laps, and it also had two GTP class victories that year in the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship. In most of its outings, 767B-002 was raced by an all-Japanese driver lineup of Takashi Yorino/Tetsuya Ota/Yojiro Terada but on occasion was driven by Pierre Dieudonne and David Kennedy, both stalwarts of Mazda's development in international sports car racing.
The 767Bs were replaced in 1990 by the newer 787s, which went on to even greater success. This Mazda 767B is the latest of Mazda's heritage fleet of cars to be restored and raced. This Mazda 767B is owned and maintained by Mazda North American Operations as part of the Mazda Heritage Collection.
