Coupe
Gottlieb Daimler formed the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft - DMG - after having patented the first internal-combustion-powered automobile in 1886. Impressed with the Daimler-built engines in the 1894 Paris-Rouen race, Viennese banker Emil Jellinek soon bought controlling interest in DMG. In 1900, their new four-cylinder car was called Mercedes, named after Jellinek's daughter.

The Mercedes 300SL was the first iteration of the SL class grand tourer, and the fastest production car of its day. The idea for a toned-down Gran Prix car tailored to affluent performance enthusiasts in the booming post-war American market was suggested by Daimler-Benz's official U.S. importer, Max Hoffman. He reasoned to the Stuttgart decision makers that a street version of the W194 Gran Prix racer would be a commercial success in the United States.

Mercedes accepted the gamble and the new 300SL - 300 for its 3.0L engine displacement and SL for Sport Leight (Sport Light) was based on the company's highly successful yet somewhat less powerful carbureted overhead cam straight six 1952 racer, the W194. The now iconic 300 SL was introduced in 1954 at the prestigious New York Auto Show as a two-seat coupe with distinctive gullwing doors. A roadster version came later. It was immediately successful and stood alone atop the automotive pecking order with its distinctive doors, first-ever production fuel injection, and world's fastest top speed. The original coupe was available from March 1955 to 1957, a roadster version from 1957 to 1963.

The current owner purchased this 'Gull Wing' in 1983. It was restored and attended the 1986 Mercedes-Benz 100 Year Anniversary Celebration at Monterey and Laguna Seca Race track. In 1994 it was set up for vintage racing and campaigned throughout the country. In 2001, it was entered at Speed Week on the Bonneville Salt Flats. A serious case of 'Salt Fever' resulted in a 15 year assault on the F/GT record. In August 2016 a Mercedes M104 sedan engine built by Roush's Competition Engines was installed. A new F/GT record of 190.759 mph was achieved.
