1910 Maytag-Mason Model A Tourabout

This is the second car designed and built by automobile legends Fred and August Duesenberg. The first design was produced between 1906 and 1908. The brothers started in the automobile manufacturing business in Iowa in 1905 with the financial backing of Mr. Mason. Mr. Maytag (later of washing machine fame) invested in the company in 1909 after the second design was on the market and getting good reviews. In 1910 the company name was changed to Maytag Mason. A car like the one you see here was the only two-cylinder car to complete the 1909 Glidden tour from Kalamazoo, Michigan to Kansas City via Denver. It is estimated that 1,500 cars were built when the company closed in 1915. This car was originally sold in Nebraska, and the unrestored radiator still bears the original state license number. It was restored from 1993 to 1996 and has since completed many driving tours. The two-cylinder engine idles with the same putt-putt exhaust sound as a two-cylinder tractor or motorcycle. A two-speed transmission allows a maximum speed of 40 mph. With no windshield, the driver and passengers sit bolt upright in the breeze.
