This one-of-a-kind Cadillac was first owned by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. He abdicated the British Throne to marry Wallis Simpson an American socialite from Baltimore. It was delivered by Alfred P. Sloan, the chairman and CEO of General Motors, during the couple's first stay at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York. It became known as 'The Duchess' and was truly a one-off coachbuilt Cadillac as well as the most famous Cadillac ever built.
Not a single body panel on the Windsors' car matched any other 1941 Cadillac. The hood, trunk, fenders, fender skirts, roof and doors were all crafted by hand and all interior appointments were hand fitted. Another unique feature was the Windsor's 'W.E.' monogram and crown on the rear doors. The Goddess hood ornament was plated in gold.
As the Duke was a well-known automobile enthusiast, Cadillac expected he would take the wheel of this car on occasion. As a result, the front compartment was as detailed and elegant as the rear. For the Duke, there were no fewer than three cigar lighters and two ashtrays as well as a humidor and a custom rack for his Sasieni pipes.
