1989 Mazda 767B Navigation
This Mazda 767B is chassis number 003, one of the three cars built by Mazdaspeed for 1989. It raced at the 1989 24 Hours of LeMans wearing race number 203 and was driven by Yojiro Terada, Marc Duez, and Volker Weidler. It finished third in the GTP class and 12th overall. The next outing was at the Fuji 1000 Km, where it was 11th overall and second in GTP.
The following year, in 1990, the 787 was introduced, with two racing at LeMans, alongside a single 767B, chassis 003, driven by Yoshimi Katayama, Takashi Yorino, and Yojiro Terada. The new 787s were unable to finish the race, while the 767B came in 20th overall and first in the IMSA GTP class.
The final race for chassis number 003 was a factory Mazda entrant at the Fuji 1000 Km, where it placed sixth overall and won the GTP class for a second race in a row.
This car's racing career came to an end in 1991 and was sold to gentleman racer Kaoru Iida, who campaigned the car in four events as a privateer during the 1991 and 1992 seasons. Around 2003, it was sold to South African Alan Dike, who used it sparingly.
The current owner acquired the car in 2013. It was sent to Speedsport in the United Kingdom who was known for their expertise with Group C racing cars. Around this time, the owner was able to acquire the original bodywork from the car's 1989 LeMans effort. The car was prepared by Speedsport for the 2014 Spa Classic.
The car was then sent to Rennwerk GmbH in Germany for a comprehensive restoration. The work was completed to 1990 specification. Upon completion, the car was entered in the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2017
