The new T-6 body for the 356 model was announced by Porsche at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of 1961. Modifications included larger front and rear windows, a bigger front hood squarer in shape, revised fuel tank, enhanced luggage capacity, and a new engine cover with dual grilles. To improve ventilation, intake louvers were added to the front scuttle. An electrically operated sliding sunroof was offered as an option for the first time. The fuel filler door was moved from the driver side to the passenger side of the car, too.
On the inside, the T-6 received a new dash with standard clock, better seat adjustments, door armrest, variable speed wipers, and a day/night rearview mirror.
Along with the introduction of the T-6 body, Porsche also returned the Carrera to the lineup. It was dubbed the Carrera 2, and it came powered with a 130 horsepower, 1996-cubic centimeter version of Porsche's racing-derived, rear-mounted, four-overhead camshaft, flat four-cylinder engine. Power was enhanced with modifications to the Old Carrera head, new aluminum alloy cylinders with Ferrarl coating, and plain main and big-end bearings for the forged crankshaft. These were the first Porsche cars to come standard with disc brakes. Public sales began in April of 1962.
The new Carrera 2 had a top speed in the neighborhood of 125 mph with zero-to-sixty mph taking 8.6 seconds. Porsche planned to build just 100 examples to satisfy homologation purposes. Despite a steep $7,600 price tag, 310 examples were produced over the production run.
This particular Carrera 2 example is finished in its original color of Oslo Blue over light brown leatherette with matching cloth inserts. The car was optioned from the factory with the rare electric sunroof, electric antenna, dual speakers, chrome wheels, wood steering wheel, and a lowered driver's seat.
This car was delivered new in Hanover, Germany, but came to the United States in 1966 when it was sold to Arthur Foyt. In 1971 it became the property of Eugene Deutsch, who brought the car to Boston in 1995.
Between May of 1998 and July of 2005, the car was given a restoration. During the restoration, the car was fitted with 356 C-style four-wheel disc brakes.
This car is one of only 310 produced and is one of approximately 30 examples fitted with the electric sunroof.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2017
