Chassis number 009 was one of 53 C-Type's built by Jaguar. It also was one of two 'C' Type's sent to the United States to compete. The European C-Type's won LeMans in 1951 and placed 1st, 2nd & 4th in 1953. It was built for Max Hoffman of New York City who was the first famed importer of foreign cars into the United States. #009 successfully competed in many races including a 3rd place at the 1952 Sheldon Cup in Elkhart Lake. It was driven by George Weaver, the many behind the Thompson Raceway project. And it won the 1952 Seneca Cup in Watkins Glen with famous race driver John Fitch at the wheel.
It then changed hands to Doc MR Wyllie who won at Cumberland/Breakneck and Watkins Glen. David Darrin (brother of coach builder Dutch Darrin and father of the current owner) purchased #009 in 1956 and competed in a number of races in the subsequent years. It raced at Cumberland, MD, Beverly MA, Thompson, CT, Equinox, VT and Nassau Bahamas through 1958. In the past several years the car was campaigned in many vintage events: Monterey, Lime Rock, Summit Point and Watkins Glen. Most recently #009 was featured in a New York State historically themed event at the Saratoga Automobile Museum.
The car is powered by a 6-cylinder engine developing 220 horsepower.
It was used as the Celebrity Pace car at the 2003 Lime Rock Fall Festival with John Fitch and Phil Hill touring the track together.
