The Giro d'Italia was a multi-day event that was run on public roads with timed stages. It was essentially a rally that included many different types of vehicles and specifications. A DeTomaso won the inaugural event in 1973 and Jean-Claude Andruet won the following year driving a turbo-charged Lancia Stratos.
For the 1975 event, Andruet was under contract with Alfa Romeo. Thus, he needed Autodelta to build him a machine that was capable of quickly traversing the many hills and windy roads. Carlo Chiti, team leader of Autodelta, decided to build a one-off coupe that was based on the Tipo 33 sports prototypes. Even though it was different than the road going Tipo 33, the Giro d'Italia Coupe was given a Tipo 33 Stradale chassis number to satisfy homologation requirements.
This one-off had a steel tubular spaceframe, a short wheelbase, and powered by a V8 engine. Its body had a similar design to the Tipo 33 and its chassis was similar to that of the Tipo 33/TT/12. The 182.9 cubic-inch V8 engine had a light alloy block and head, Lucas Fuel injection, and offered 440 horsepower. It was backed by a five-speed manual transmission with disc brakes located at all four corners.
The Giro d'Italia Coupe raced in the Group 5 category and was easily one of the fastest cars in the field. Its Achilles' heel proved to be its V8 engine, which ran on just six cylinders through most of the stages. Nevertheless, those six-cylinders were quick enough to help Andruet to hold onto the lead. Andruet's hopes of defending his title came to an end when the engine finally quit. This allowed Giorgio Pianta to win in his Abarth-modified Fiat 131.
