The Jaguar E-Type, introduced in 1961 at the Geneva Salon, had a timeless design that was influenced by the racing D-Type. It had a monocoque tub which formed the main body/chassis structure while a tubular spaceframe extended forwards to support the engine. The 3.8-liter, triple carbureted, 'S' unit was the same that was first offered as an option on the preceding XK150. With an available 265 horsepower, the E-Type had more performance than the preceding XK models. This was due to it weighing around 500 less than the XK150 and it had Malcolm Sayer aerodynamics which had helped the D-Type be so successful in racing.
The E-Type was given double wishbones, independent front suspension mounted on the forward subframe. In the back the suspension broke new ground for a large-capacity sports car, being independent at a time when most of its major rivals relied on the traditional live rear axle. Stopping power was handled by disc brakes located at all four corners. The rear brakes were mounted inboard alongside the differential to reduce unsprung weight.
This particular E-Type Coupe was built by Jaguar during the spring of 1965. It was built as a left-hand drive model and was the 291st example in the 4.2-liter series. It is believed to have been delivered new to the United States. It sat in a barn near Gaston, Oregon for decades and is currently largely complete, but in need of both mechanical and cosmetic restoration. The engine had been replaced at some point with another 4.2-liter unit. The dark blue exterior has dents and imperfections, and the red interior appears to be largely original.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2017
