1989 Porsche 911 Navigation
The 356 Speedster had proven to be a popular option in the early 1950s and in 1983, the name was revived. Several thousand, based on the 911 SC platform, were built at the direction of Porsche CEO Peter Schutz, and the project was supervised by Technical Director Helmuth Bott. Porsche stylist Tony Lapine removed the windshield, folding top assembly, and rear seats for a 911 cabriolet. The front glass was replaced with a steeply raked, low-profile removable windshield and frame in a similar fashion to the original 356 Speedster.
The area behind the driver and passenger seat was transformed into carpeted storage beneath a hinged fiberglass tonneau. The electric top of the cabriolet was replaced with a minimalist fabric top that could be used for 'Emergency use.'
The Speedster was available in both 'narrow-body' or 'Turbo-look' guise, however, nearly all that were exported to the United States were wide-bodied, with wide Fuchs forged-alloy wheels and larger tires. Most came well equipped with items such as air-conditioning, electric seats, leather upholstery, plush carpeting, and stereos.
After this Speedster proved popular, Porsche again revived the idea for the 1989 model year as a stop-gap when the new Type 964 Carrera was delayed in coming to market.
Just like the earlier SC-based version, Lapine produced a two-seat convertible in both narrow and wide-fendered, 'Turbo-look' body styles. Around 2,060 examples of the cabriolet with the M503 Speedster option package were built between January and September of 1989, and of that number, only 800 or so went to United States customers. Power was the standard 964 Carrera 2 setup with a 3.2-liter, 217 horsepower engine mated to a G50 five-speed manual transmission.
This particular 'Turbo-look' Speedster has just over 8,000 miles on its odometer. It is finished in Guards Red with a cashmere interior in 'Ruffled' leather. There is a Blaupunkt Reno stereo entertainment system, air- conditioning, electrically adjustable driver and passenger seats, a shortened shift lever, an alarm system, and cruise control.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2017
