Founded by Henry Leland in 1917, Lincolns were assembled using engines supplied by Ford, Buick, Cadillac, Marmon and Packard. The first model in 1917 was powered by a V8 engine. The company suffered during the 1920's and was forced to seek financial assistance and was ultimately sold to Ford Motor Company in 1922. In 1940, the Lincoln Motor Company was renamed Lincoln Division of Ford Motor Company.
The Lincoln Continental was conceived by Edsel Ford and stylist Bob Gregorie designed the body. First introduced in 1939 as a coach-built convertible, it is often credited as being among the first personal luxury cars. The nameplate has been in use by Lincoln at various times for more than 75 years. In 1948 Lincoln produced 847 Coupes with a base price tag of $4,660 and they are recognized by the Classic Car Club of America as 'Full Classic.'
This 1948 Lincoln Continental is a 2 door Coupe. It has a 3-speed manual gearbox and the 292 cubic-inch engine produces 125 horsepower. The 1948 Lincoln was one of the last cars produced by a United States manufacturer with a V12 engine. The body sits on a 125-inch wheelbase chassis and it weighs approximately 4,100 pounds. Its 0-60 mph time is 17.7 seconds, a far cry from today's supercar times.
