1971 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI Navigation
The Rolls-Royce Phantom VI was made from 1968 through 1990. It represented the last word in craftsmanship from the company known for making 'The Best Car in the World.' It took 18 months to two years to build one at Mulliner, Park Ward, the in-house coachbuilder at Rolls-Royce Motors Ltd.
Most Phantoms of this era were bodied as limousines, but there were also a few landaulets, such as this one, meaning that it had a convertible section over the rear occupants. Generally, landaulets were made for heads of state or royalty. This sensational example was made for the president of Ivory Coast.
The Phantom VI was the last Crew-built Rolls-Royce with a separate chassis. Riding on a 145-inch wheelbase, it featured coil springs in front with leaf springs and a live axle in the rear. It was powered by a 6.2-liter 90-degree V8 with a bore of 4.1 inch and a stroke of 3.6 inches with twin SU carburetors and coupled to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. In a 1979 upgrade, engine capacity was increased to 6.75 liters and a 3-speed automatic gearbox with torque converter was substituted, and separate front and rear air conditioning units were provided.
