1972 Ford Capri MK1 Coupe

The 1972 Ford Capri RS2600 Group 2 Competition Coupe is said to be the car that cemented the reputation of the Ford Capri as the 'European Mustang.' In 1971, an RS2600 won the European Touring Car Championship in the hands of Germany's Dieter Glemser. Then in 1972, an RS2600 won the ETCC at the hands of Jochen Mass. These back-to-back wins gave the Capri some much needed racing DNA and led to the car being offered for sale in South Africa, Australia and the United States of America.

Each 1972 Ford Capri RS2600 Group 2 Competition Coupe was fitted with a Weslake-developed V6 engine with special alloy cylinder heads, Kugelfischer fuel injection and a dry sump lubrication system. They produce and impressive 320 horsepower. The cars use fiberglass panels to replace steel panels to decrease their weight.

After clinching the 1972 European Touring Car Championship, this Capri RS2600 was modified and raced in the 1973 season. It was quite competitive and was later sold to a buyer in the United States. It would be raced for several years before changing hands once again. It would continue to be raced until 1981.

This car was located in August of 2016 and a full restoration returning it to its original as raced form soon followed. This historic race car retains all of the factory homologation from 1973, as well as 95% of the original panels along with the correct Weslake engine, as raced during the 1973 season.
