1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Coupe

When it comes to truly iconic automobiles, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is certainly among the most coveted. The 300 SL was the first iteration of the SL-Class grand tourer and when introduced in 1954, was the fastest production car of its day. The 300 series was first introduced as the distinctive coupe featuring gull-wing doors. Later an open two seat roadster would be added to the lineup.

Built by Daimler-Benz AG, the 300 SL features a direct fuel injected 3.0-liter overhead cam straight-6 engine borrowed from the regular four-door 300.

The 300SL is basically a street legal Grand Prix race car tailored for the exceptionally well-heeled performance enthusiasts. The 300 SL - 300 for its 3.0 liter engine displacement and SL for Sport Leicht (Sport Light) - was surprisingly introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show. This was unheard of at the time, as Mercedes had always showcased new models at the Frankfurt or Geneva shows.

As expected, the 300 SL was an immediate hit. Even today the 300 SL stands alone with its distinctive doors, first-ever production fuel injection, and world's fastest top speed. The original coupe was available from March 1955 to 1957, and the roadster from 1957 to 1963.
