World War II took a heavy toll on industrial manufacturers all across Europe. Following the war, Porsche slowly rebuilt itself. They used readily available, and inexpensive, components from the Volkswagen 'Beetle' that Dr. Ferdinand Porsche had designed before the war. The 356 was Porsche's first production automobile and was introduced in 1948 by Ferdinand 'Ferry' Porsche, son of founder Ferdinand. The 356 is a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive car. As it evolved throughout the 1950s, fewer and fewer parts were shared between Volkswagen and Porsche.

The 356 began production in Gmund, Austria where 50 of the aluminum-bodied cars were built. But, in 1950 assembly was relocated to Zuffenhausen, Germany, where production of the now steel-bodied 356 continued until the end of its run. By the early 1950s it had gained renown among enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic for its aerodynamics, superb handling, and excellent quality. A class win at LeMans in 1951 certainly helped elevate the marque as well. The Porsche 356 was so successful in competition that a new model, the 'Speedster' was soon added. It was a sporty, stripped down roadster available only in the United States, with a low, rakish windshield that could be easily removed for weekend racing.

In late 1955, with many small but significant changes, the 356A was introduced. Production of 356 models continued until 1965. This car is painted Glacier White, one of four special order colors Porsche offered between 1957 and 1959.
