Ferdinand Porsche designed and built his first car, the Porsche 356 Coupe, in 1949. In the 1950s Porsche commissioned Karosserie Reutter to turn the original Porsche 356 Coupes into handcrafted luxury Cabriolets. This is one of four Porsche 356 Cabriolets sold in the United States from a total of 294 produced by Porsche during 1952. It is an early example of the Porsche 356 Pre-A Cabriolet, distinguished by its one-piece 'bent window' windshield, which predated the 356 Type A's 'Curved screen' introduced in 1955. The Pre-A Cabriolet was the top of the Porsche range, which was brought to the American market through importer Max Hoffman.
This car was purchased in 1953 by John Carter of Chicago. It was later owned by Don Severson, who used it very sparingly for 45 years. It was purchased by the current caretakers in late 2008, with just over 30,000 original miles, and it was restored in 2009.
