In 1956, Ferrari introduced a new V12 that had been re-engineered by Vittorio Jano and Vittorio Bellentani. In 1957, the engine was increased to 3.8-liters for the new 315 S that was designed to beat the Jaguar D-Type and the Maserati 450S. Ferrari entered two of these cars in the Mille Miglia for Piero Taruffi and Wolfgang von Trips, and the race was won by Taruffi in this car. Tragically, in that same race, a tire blew on Alphonso de Portago's Ferrari 335 S, resulting in several fatalities - so this was the end of the mighty Mille Miglia road race. Later in 1957, at LeMans, this Ferrari 315 S was the only factory car to complete the race, finishing fifth, and Ferrari went on to win the 1957 World Championship for Sports Cars. This car is the only remaining example of the 315 S, the ultimate Mille Miglia Ferrari. It was restored to its Mille Miglia configuration by Fantuzzi in Italy in 1985.
