1913 Isotta Fraschini Tipo IM Navigation
Isotta Fraschini built six of these Tipo IM racing models in 1913, and three of them were raced in that year's Indianapolis 500, interestingly, the Isotta Fraschini factory was on strike as these cars were built, so another company installed the fuel tanks. The rivets used to seal the fuel tanks failed on the cars driven by Harry Grant and Vincenzo Trucco, so both failed to finish.
Of the six Isotta Fraschini IMs built, just two are known to have survived. The workmanship on all of the early Isottas was spectacular. The Tipo IM had a race-bred 120 horsepower, a 4-cylinder engine designed by Giuseppe Gaetano Stefanini, a pioneer of the overhead-camshaft engine who worked in collaboration with the Venetian engineer Giustino Cattaneo.
