Unlike sister companies Cord and Duesenberg, named for their founders, the Auburn title came from its Indiana home and had begun in the 19th century as a buggy business.
This Auburn 8 100A Phaeton, designed by Alan Leamy, has been given a comprehensive restoration. It features Auburn's 100 horsepower 368.8 cubic-inch inline 8-cylinder engine, an L-head design that used a 2-barrel Schebler carburetor and is backed by a 3-speed manual transmission. The engine is backed by a Columbia-supplied dual-ratio 2-speed rear-axle assembly, allowing the driver to select between a high and low final-gearing set in any transmission ratio. The suspension consists of solid front and live rear-axle housings set up with semi-elliptic leaf springs. This car also used the 4-wheel Steeldraulic drum brakes.
This Phaeton is finished in light tan with brown accents, and features the grille with chrome center-divider, matching center-trimmed headlamps, and the Auburn name spelled out below the winged 'flying lady' hood mascot. There are dual side-mounted spare tires, correct trunk and luggage rack, and cowl and driving lamps. The interior features leather seating with wood accents and chrome trim work, plus deep-pile carpeting, a Philco Transitone radio, passenger-assist grab bars, rear-passenger armrests and the original dash and instrumentation.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2017
