The Volkswagen Transporter was launched at the 1949 Geneva Auto Show and over the next 64 years that followed, over nine million were built. The bus shared the Beetle's air-cooled engine and could be operated on low-grade fuel.

Volkswagen produced the split-window Transporter from 1950 to 1967 and was available as an ambulance, police car, fire truck, bus, camper, and even a railroad speeder. Pickups were sold in the United States from 1952.

Initially, the pickup body styles were available as single-cabs, but due to public demand, 550 double-cab models were coachbuilt by Binz from 1955 to 1959. Modifications to the double cab included shortening the bed to five feet and installed a three-person seat with a curbside door.

In 1959, Volkswagen began making their own double-cab model.

It is believed that just 29 examples of the Binz double cabs have survived. This particular example is Binz body number 148. It was completed in March of 1958. In 2001, it was discovered in need of complete refurbishment which resulted in a high-quality rotisserie restoration. It is finished in Dove Blue with gray and white slotted wheels and a black interior. Since the restoration was completed, it has been driven fewer than 400 miles.

This Type 2 Double Cab is powered by an 1192cc flat four-cylinder engine fitted with a single Solex carburetor. There is a four-speed manual transmission and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.
