For many years, visitors to Yellowstone National Park were chauffeured in large open-air buses, produced by the White Company of Cleveland, Ohio, and operated by the privately owned Yellowstone Park Transportation Company. Between 1936 and 1938, the last generation of these was built, dubbed the White 706, of which 98 examples were built. They had a 190-inch wheelbase chassis and were powered by a robust six-cylinder engine. The bodies were built by the Cleveland coachbuilders Bender and styled by Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky.
The Model 706 had an aerodynamic design with a large canvas-covered roof that could be opened or closed, making it ideal for all types of weather conditions. It also allowed for nearly panoramic views of the park for the tourists riding inside.
This particular example is Yellowstone Park no. 402. It is powered by a 300 cubic-inch Ford inline six-cylinder engine mated to an automatic transmission. It has power steering, a 1995 Ford F450 master cylinder with a power brake booster, a 12-volt electrical system, an electric fuel pump, and Autometer instruments.By Daniel Vaughan | Dec 2017
