  • Chassis Number: BRJ1
1960 Lola MKII Navigation
This particular car is the first ever production Lola single seater built having originated from the prototype which was first raced at Brands Hatch in December of 1959. The prototype was badly damaged in a testing accident at Goodwood and the remains were most probably used to construct the first production car - being this car, chassis number BRJ 1.

BRJ 1 was part of three car quasi Lola works team run under Team Fitzwilliam Racing in the 1960 Formula Junior European Championship.

During the season it raced at Monza, Helsinki, Roskilde Ring, Monaco, Chimay, Albi, Reims, Nurburgring, Stuttgart, Karlskoga, Goodwood, Brands Hatch and Innsbruck and gained a first, second, third and fourth places plus a number of minor places. Various drivers raced BRJ 1 in 1960 including Sir John Whitmore, Mike Anthony, Annie Soisbault, Juan Manel Bordeu, Michael May and Peter Ashdown.

In 1961 it only ran once at Chimay having been outclassed by the new rear engined cars. In 1962 it ran at Goodwood and Silverstone with Teddy Pilette under the Mille Miglia Ecurie from Belgium.

It was abandoned in the Black Forest in Germany in the mid-1960s and was stored in the loft of Fahrzeugmuseum Reichert Marxzell until liberated in 2005 and brought to New Zealand in 'time capsule' original condition.

This car had an interesting association with Ferrari as it was borrowed by them in mid-1960 for 'development' purposes. Ferrari had Stanguellini fit a Fiat Formula Junior engine and it ran at Monza and Nurburgring as a Lola Fiat. Ferrari's interest was generated by the Lola spaceframe chassis which was proving superior to the Italian ladder chassis.

The Lola FJ has a Ford 997cc engine with twin DCOE 40 Webers producing about 95 horsepower at 8000 RPM. It has a BMC A Series 4 speed gearbox and BMC differential. It weighs 460 kg.
