1985 Mazda RX-7 Navigation
It's a bold claim to say your car is the most successful endurance racer of all time, but the Team Highball RX-7 IMSA GTU car has the pedigree to back that up. Starting life in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1984 under the direction of racecar driver Amos Johnson, this made-from-scratch IMSA GTU car was the first tube-frame racer constructed for the 1985 season under the series' new rules. It wouldn't take long for the No. 71 Team Highball RX-7 to find success, winning the GTU Class at 1985's 24 Hours of Daytona - just five weeks after it was completed.
The Team Highball RX-7 would compete through the rest of the 1980s, winning the GTU class at the 24 Hours of Daytona a total of five times in all. It also won at Sebring in 1988 and at Watkins Glen in 1987. In 69 races on the IMSA circuit, the Team Highball RX-7 won its class outright eight times.
Its final race would be in 1991 at Watkins Glen. It is owned by its driver, Ralph Thomas.
