1978 Mazda RX3 Navigation
Built and raced by Newport Beach architect George Kettles from 1979 to 1982. In the IMSA Champion Spark Plug RS (Radial Sedan) Series, this 1978 Mazda RX-3 spent the majority of its racing tenure on the West Coast. It is equipped with a 12A bridge-ported rotary engine and ran against full fields of BMW 2002s, Datsun 510s, Plymouth Arrows and even Ford Pintos when new. The Beck's Beer livery came in 1981 as Mr. Kottles proposed a sponsorship to the local Beck's distributor. Beck's received this livery in exchange for 10 cases of 'product' and $300.
This car is owned by Mazda employee Robert Davis and has gone through a complete restoration over the last three years. Since the car was originally acid-dipped in an effort to save weight, it was extremely difficult to restore correctly. Every effort has been made to keep the car as original as possible while updating the safety equipment.
