As the successor to the 'modern formal' style of the 1956 - 1957 Continental Mark II, the enormous 1958 through 1960 Continental Mark III, IV and V were heavily sculpted art on wheels. Lincoln chose not to follow the competition to the ever larger fins of the day. Produced at the new Wixom assembly plant both Lincoln and Thunderbird models featured all new unibody construction which eliminated the traditional chassis frame. This weight reduction was negated by increased need for steel in the unibody structure. The result was a 19 foot long, 5,180 pound luxury automobile base priced at $7,056.00. Only 2,044 Mark V Convertibles were produced.
