1974 McLaren M16C

A works car for the 1974 season for David Hobbs, this M16 was built to the interim C/D specifications from new. With backing from Carling Black Label it was driven to fifth by Hobbs in the Indy 500 after starting ninth. At the end of the season it was sold to privateer Salt Walther. He raced the car at Indy twice with a ninth in 1976 as the best result. Chassis M16C-6 was subsequently raced by Jerry Karl a further three times in the Indy 500 with a final outing in 1981 when it finished 15th. Following its long racing career it was acquired by Chuck Haines of Can-AM Cars Ltd. In 2015 it was comprehensively restored to the configuration and livery used in the first of six Indy 500 entries. It was then demonstrated ahead of the 100th Indy 500 and then purchased by the current owner.
