The 72 was another innovative design by Colin Chapman featuring inboard brakes, side-mounted radiators and an overhead air intake. Chapman produced one of the most remarkable and successful designs in F1 history. The overall shape and advanced aerodynamics, resembling a wedge on wheels, produced a car that was years ahead of its rivals.

Emerson Fittipaldi's first World Championship victory came in chassis #5 (72/5) in October 1970 in only his fourth F1 World Championship start. This is a bittersweet stat, as Emmo's USGP victory clinched the World Championship for teammate Jochem Rindt, who was killed in practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in September.

In 1971 Emerson struggled during the season but scored good results, finishing a respectable sixth in the World Championship. In 1972 Emmo became the youngest World Champion in F1's history, winning five races. The car now wore a striking paint scheme of JPS black and gold. In 1974 Fittipaldi left Lotus for McLaren.

After six years, 24 victories, two drivers' and three constructors' championships, the 72 was retired for the 1976 season and replaced by the Lotus 77.
