The fifth of 13 McLaren M23s built from 1973 through 1977. Chassis number-five took Emerson Fittipaldi to his second Formula 1 World Championship after victories in his home Grand Prix at Interlagos in Brazil and in the Belgian Grand Prix at Nivelles. Two more podiums (the Spanish and Dutch Grands Prix) added to Emerson's 1974 World Championship total. Fittipaldi also scored World Championship point with M23/5 at the Monaco and Swedish Grands Prix. After retiring from the French Grand Prix in July with engine trouble, M23/5 never raced again.
In 2014 Emerson celebrated the 40th anniversary of his second World Championship driving this car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
