Porsche created a limited-edition competition version of its popular 944 Coupe intended to contest SCCA club racing. Seven prototype cars were built in May of 1985 at Porsche's development center in Weissach, Germany. Upon completion, they were sent to Al Holbert's Porsche Motor Sport North America division in Pennsylvania. Designated for the GT class in the SCCA's Endurance Championship, the cars were delivered to independent racers around the country. These factory-built lightweight racers were devoid of many interior components, including air-conditioning, sunroof, and sound insulation.
The road-going examples had a factory claimed 0-to-60mph time of less than 9 seconds. This particular example is powered by a 2.5-liter SOHC 8-valve engine fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox.
