2001 Opel Speedster Navigation
This Opel Speedster is the functional GM Prototype. Power is from a 2.2-liter GM Ecotec engine from the Opel Astra and is powered by a five-speed manual transmission. The cars were sold by the German automaker Opel, with Lotus developing and producing the Opel Speedster and Vauxhall VX220 on the new Series 2 Elise chassis. General Motors agreed to provide sufficient investment in the new car. Production of the Speedster commenced in March of 2001.
The Speedster had an aluminum chassis tub that weighed a mere 159 lbs. The bodywork was made entirely of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP). The entire car weighs only 1,929 lb, which made it 220 lb lighter than the similarly sized Toyota MR2.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2018
