In 1909, Cadillac was under the guidance of its founder, Henry Martyn Leland, and his son Wilfred, and in the second year as part of William Crapo Durant's General Motors. Cadillac introduced its four-cylinder automobile in 1905, the Model D. The vehicle was updated over the years, and by 1908 had five different models in their catalog. For 1909, there was only one, the four-cylinder powered Model 30 and would remain the sole model in Cadillac's catalog for the next six years although the model designation changed in 1913. Also in 1913, the Model 30 received an increase in stroke of 1 1/4-inch which greatly increased displacement and brake horsepower even though the calculated rating stayed the same.
