1922 Duesenberg Model A Navigation
The Duesenberg Straight 8 motorcar is not only the first model built by Fred and Auggie Duesenberg, it is also the first in series production in the United States for the Straight 8 engine. Initially shown at the Commodore Hotel in New York City in late 1920, it would garner significant attention as an elegant and expensive premium automobile for the wealthiest clients. it is powered by the 260 cubic-inch engine with an overhead cam and two valves per cylinder that produces 88 horsepower. It also features 4-wheel hydraulic brakes.
With a base price of $7,800, a huge sum in the 1920s, very few was built between 1921 through 1925. It is believed that a total of 650 units were built and fewer than 30 are known to exist today. Model As were offered in various body configurations. This Phaeton is among the rarest and most desirable.

This Duesenberg Model A Touring car wears coachwork by Millspaugh & Irish. It was formerly part of the West Coast stables of Sid Buka and Nelson Thorpe, before joining the previous owner's collection in 2004. When acquired by the previous owner, the car was in 'modified - Hot Rod' condition, retaining its original frame, but had been shortened by seven inches. The front half of the original Millspaugh & Irish touring body, the differential, the rear axle, and the correct original braking system was still intact. The engine is correct, though its block is believed to have been a 1924 factory replacement.
The car was given an authentic and correct restoration. The chassis was returned to its original length, and the body was rebuilt using the surviving original panels, with the remainder recreated to a pattern taken from an original Millspaugh & Irish touring, using correct aluminum over wood framing. The completed car was finished in two-tone grey.
Since the restoration work was completed, the car has earned a Senior First Prize in Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club judging, Best Duesenberg at the Club's West Coast Meet (twice), and the Antique Automobile Club of America's Auburn Cord Duesenberg Trophy, recognizing it as the finest ACD automobile shown that year. It has also been fully Certified Category One (D-008) by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2018
