In September of 1965, Porsche introduced a new Targa roof model at the Frankfurt Auto Show. In commemoration of Porsche's successive wins at the Sicilian road race, the new model was called the Targa. The following year, a production version became available on both the 911 and 912.
Targa models were initially produced at a race of seven per day, but this number quickly increased due to the popularity. During its first year of production, 718 examples were built.
They had a substantial safety roll-over hoop finished in a satin-like steel to provide safety and structural rigidity. There was a rigid plastic panel over the passenger compartment and a zip-out plastic rear window.
Weber carburetors was adopted in February of 1966 and served as a replacement to the Solex models. This switched helped solve a flat spot in acceleration noted with earlier models. In August of 1968, another updated model appeared, with the rear window being changed to glass.
This particular example has remained in single-family ownership from new until 2013. It was purchased new by a doctor whose son later inherited the car.
This car has is period Porsche embossed handbook, original window sticker, Blaupunkt radio, Targa top, and tool kit. The car has been restored to its as-delivered color scheme, finished in Polo Red. The work was completed in 2008.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2018
